Over the past fifteen months, Emma Bowden, our HRIS Implementation Consultant, has worked with a variety of different businesses to help them incorporate new HR technology. She tells us more about her passion for technology and explains what it is that she enjoys about her job.
When did you start working at Silver Cloud HR?
How did you get into the HR industry?
I was studying Business and Business Information Systems at University when I decided that I wanted to take a gap year to benefit from practical experience. During University, I had always enjoyed the lectures which were focused upon HR and People so I knew that this could be a good avenue to explore. I applied for a position in my local council’s HR department, and after 18 months, I was able to return to university to complete my final year.
After I graduated, I began working in an HR department where I worked my way up to an HR Advisory position. One of the projects that I most enjoyed working on was implementing Access SelectHR into the business. It was my first experience of working with a consultant to design and configure the system.
After two and a half years, I moved into an HR Manager role and then two years later, I joined Silver Cloud HR to pursue a career in HR systems.
What is your typical daily routine?
I’m kept busy every single day and I thrive on it. To keep myself motivated for the day, I try to do an exercise class first thing. Then, once I’ve had a coffee, I can sit down at my laptop and start working.
My role at Silver Cloud HR is very varied which is one of the things that I love. In general, a typical working day could consist of client calls, speaking with colleagues configuring systems, quality assurance, and project management.
I really enjoy the variety of my job. If I’m speaking to a client, it could be about training, discovery or establishing an update on the latest project. I enjoy getting to know the client because understanding what they do and what they need is vital to ensuring that we can configure the system to their specific requirements.
I also appreciate the fact that if I need any advice or support, my colleagues are all readily available. We each have our own individual specialisms which allow us to share advice and knowledge. It’s great to work in such a team environment.
What does your role at Silver Cloud HR involve?
I implement HR technology into businesses of all sizes from start to finish. I’m responsible for planning the project, capturing the client’s requirements, building and testing the system and managing the relationships with both clients and vendors.
When I’m managing a project, I need to ensure that I set deliverable milestones and manage budgets effectively. I also need to ensure that all stakeholders are aware of the project status. HR systems involve so many different people (not just the HR department), that it’s incredibly important that everyone involved is aware of the project plan.
One thing that I’ve learned is that every single client wants different things out of their system. This means that the build and configuration stage is unique for every project. As well as adding in new fields and approval processes, it’s also important to ensure that the system is branded up and fully automated to the client’s requirements.
It’s a big responsibility but it’s one that I thoroughly enjoy.
What is your favourite part of your job?
I love being able to work from home! It’s not for everyone, you do have to be super self-motivated, but I love it!
What is the most exciting technological advancement over the past 10 years
Virtual Assistants such as Google Home or Amazon Echo. The popularity of these devices has grown so much in the last 10 years and they are so affordable now. It’s amazing to see how many people have adapted to using them in their daily life. Even my mum and dad have one!
Some people use their assistant to control every appliance in their home – they don’t have to move off their sofa! I’m not sure this is great for health reasons, but it’s still great technology.
How do you think technology will continue to change in the next 5-10 years?
I think Virtual Assistant technology will grow even further. I imagine your assistant will be able to drive you to work, make your coffee, operate your laptop, turn on the oven, etc. Everything will be done for you – all without you lifting a finger.
