What is temperature checking?

Temperature checking is when employers set aside dedicated time to assess the general feel and thoughts of their team on various elements of the organisation.

Results are scored on a ‘temperature’ based system, which employers can use to analyse and assess for areas of improvement.

Traditional annual surveys vs Regular temperature meetings

There are many reasons why regular temperature checking is more beneficial than traditional annual surveys. Annual surveys are becoming outdated and are not the most effective tool when engaging with employees. They do not prove efficient or effective when trying to identify issues and gather insights into the wellbeing and satisfaction of the organisation.

Traditional Annual Surveys
  • Can be viewed as a box ticking exercise
  • Ignored in employee inbox
  • Sometimes lengthy, leading to inconclusive submissions
  • Full opinions are not put across
  • Not cost effective
Regular Temperature Checking
  • Face-to-face
  • Honest, open discussions
  • Employees feel engaged and listened to
  • Actionable tasks
  • Loop back to monitor improvements

Winningtemp can provide more details on the reasons above as well as many more on their blog: Why annual employee surveys belong to the past decade: a checklist.

How to conduct a temperature meeting (the Winningtemp way)

Winningtemp have put together a simple template to follow when conducting your temperature meetings. Using data gathered from your employees, the conversations can be led with the facts on how everyone is feeling.

Choosing two questions or trends from the data, you can delve deeper and work on solutions that will keep things improving for your employees.

The magic of temperature testing

Temperature testing and meetings quite simply increases engagement with open, vulnerable, action-oriented team conversations. They:

  1. Generate native solutions
  2. Foster participation and create accountability
  3. Lift a huge burden from HR’s shoulders
  4. Improve employee retention
