About the project

The Stroke Association is the UK’s leading charity dedicated to supporting stroke survivors, carers and families. With over 60 years of life-changing work behind them, the organisation continues to drive improvements in stroke treatment, recovery and care.

When their legacy HR system started to hinder efficiency and cultural alignment, the Stroke Association partnered with Silver Cloud to modernise their HR technology and create a platform that reflects their values of trust, autonomy and flexibility.

The challenge

The Stroke Association’s previous HR system had become a barrier to efficiency and agility. It required a dedicated system specialist to manage updates and lacked the flexibility to support the organisation’s evolving culture and way of working.

As Jessica James, a senior representative from the Stroke Association, explained, the system was “inflexible” and “outdated”. Particularly in areas like annual leave management, where it couldn’t support their trust-based approach of allowing employees to book holidays without managerial approval.

The charity needed a system that could simplify HR processes, reduce dependency on technical support, and better reflect its values of empowerment and collaboration.

The solution

To deliver a system that could evolve with the organisation, the Stroke Association partnered with Silver Cloud for a full HR transformation. This covered everything from system selection through to go-live and beyond.

After carefully evaluating their options, the team selected MHR iTrent, a flexible and user-friendly HR platform that could adapt to their needs and scale for the future. Silver Cloud provided expert project management, coordinating a large implementation team and more than 60 user acceptance testers to ensure a smooth transition.

The configuration of the system was designed to reflect the charity’s culture by increasing autonomy and trust while improving efficiency. Silver Cloud’s consultants also worked closely with internal stakeholders throughout the implementation, offering hands-on support and clear communication during a particularly busy period.

Jessica praised the Silver Cloud team, particularly Sam and Emma, for their responsiveness, understanding and ability to keep the project moving, noting that the partnership helped them stay confident and focused from start to finish.

The new HR system went live successfully in December, delivering a more intuitive and flexible experience for employees, reducing reliance on external support, and providing a solid foundation for future HR innovation.

“I would absolutely recommend Silver Cloud to any organisation going through this type of full HR technology change from end to end.”
Jessica James, Stroke Association

The future

With their new system in place, the Stroke Association is preparing to expand its digital HR capabilities. The next phase includes implementing the recruitment module to streamline hiring, building a dedicated talent acquisition team, and exploring flexible benefits to further support employee wellbeing.

These initiatives will strengthen the charity’s ability to attract, retain and empower the people who make its mission possible.
